THE DOCTOR IS IN: DOOGIE HOWSER M.D.

Back in the early ‘90s, Friday was the most anticipated day of the week for young TV viewers with its fun line-up of TV shows like Ninja Turtles, X-Men, McGyver and of course, Doogie Howser M.D.! When we were children, most of us would stay up until 9 p.m. just to catch a glimpse of the young doctor with the angelic face, boyish looks and uncanny intelligence.

This popular medical TV sitcom which started during the year 1989 and ended on its second season in 1993, revolved around the life of a young 16 year-old doctor, Dooger Howser (played by Neil Patrick Harris), who struggled to assert his abilities as a professional doctor, and simultaneously dealt with the joys and angst of growing up. Although the show concerned itself with serious medical issues, it did a good job in combining its dramatic episodes with comedic flair. TV audiences were surely amused with the show’s interesting characters like Doogie’s humorous friend, Vinnie (Max Casella), his girlfriend, Wanda (Lisa Dean Ryan) and other fellow doctors—Dr. Canfield and Dr. McGuire.

Despite the current popularity of numerous medical TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, E.R., and Scrubs, Dooger Howser M.D. will always be remembered as the classic medical drama that brought enjoyment to those memorable years of our childhood.

Sigh, doesn’t the opening song make you feel nostalgic?
